Running Away From Romeo Chapter 1
I was just 13yrs old when my father had an extra marital affair. I would watch my mother cry day in day out. My older brother tried talking to my father who promised to change but those were just lies. My father continued seeing his mistress and he stopped caring for my siblings and I. my mother had to struggle on her own to put food on the table and provide money for school fees.
When I was in grade 11, my father moved out of the house and moved to his mistress’ house who was currently pregnant for him. My mother’s BP was too high to an extent of being admitted at the hospital. My mother was admitted for two weeks but my father only visited her once. My older sister who was 18 got so pissed and said “you know what Chipo, I will not watch our mother suffer on this hospital bed like this. Dad is an accountant but he has completely stopped supporting us all because of his young mistress. I know where his girlfriend stays so tomorrow we will go to her place and teach her a lesson.” My older brother heard our discussion and said “I know what dad is doing is wrong but please don’t go to that woman’s house and cause trouble. We serve a living God and I know karma will visit our father soon. God will fight our battles.”
The next morning, my sister and I drove to my father’s mistress’ house and waited for him to leave for work. After he left we entered the house and started shouting at his mistress warning her to leave our father alone but she was rude to us. Knowing how my sister was short tempered, I knew we were going to be problems. My sister asked the mistress “so you are saying that you won’t leave our father alone? Find your own man, someone in your age group.” But the mistress said “and who the hell do you think you are? What authority do you have over my decisions? As far as I’m concerned, I’m not leaving your father so get used to seeing me around.” My sister was upset, I tried asking her to calm down but she ended up slapping my father’s mistress then went to the kitchen and started destroying things. I just stood and watched the turn of events. My sister got tired so we left.
In the evening, my father came home with police officers and had us arrested. We pleaded with him and asked for forgiveness but he said “you two think you are clever, you think the property you destroyed is cheap? You will remain in police custody till you pay me k10000 for the property you destroyed.” We cried but my father left us. My brother talked to mum who was still admitted. Mum told our brother to sell her car and use the money to settle our father. My brother couldn’t find a buyer for the car so we were in police custody for a week. My brother finally sold the car and we were released. When we go home, mum said “stop fighting your father. He is old enough to make his decisions. I know what I earn isn’t enough but we will survive and all of you will be great in future.”
Before bed time I told my sister “you know what Mutinta, I’m never falling in love. Our mother is suffering just because she fell in love. I’ll just be dating men for fun but not falling in love or getting married. A woman destroyed our parents’ home and I will destroy one too.” My sister looked at me and said “eh… Chipo, that’s being wicked. Can’t you see how we are suffering because dad decided live with his side chick? Are you sure you want another family to feel the pain we are feeling right now? Just forgive dad and forge ahead.” Even after discussing with my sister, I knew I wasn’t going to change my mind.
As the years went by, my father kept on having kids with his mistress while I still hoped he would change his mind and come back home but he didn’t. My siblings were finally at the university while I was still home waiting for my grade 12 results. My sister did a short course and in two years she was already working while my brother was an engineering student.
